Vedische Wiskunde

Het Instituut voor Vedische Studies  verzorgt presentaties en cursussen op het gebied van de Vedische Wiskunde, zoals beschreven in het boek ‘Vedic Mathematics’ van Śrī Bhāratī Kṛṣṇa Tīrthajī Mahārāja Śaṅkarācārya.

Vedische Wiskunde is na acht jaar diepgaand onderzoek en reflectie herontdekt en opnieuw vorm gegeven door Zijne Heiligheid Jagadguru Svāmi Śrī Bhāratī Kṛṣṇa Tīrthajī Mahārāja Śaṅkarācārya of Govardhana Maṭha, Puri (1884 – 1960).
Het is gebaseerd op zestien Sūtra’s en dertien ‘hulp’ Sūtra’s die kort en krachtig de werkwijze aangeven om een wiskundig probleem op te lossen. Zijne Heiligheid vertelde dat hij zestien delen had geschreven, één voor iedere Sūtra en dat de manuscripten in het huis van een van zijn leerlingen lagen. De manuscripten zijn echter op een of andere manier verloren gegaan en Zijne Heiligheid was van plan de zestien delen opnieuw vanuit zijn geheugen op te schrijven. Dat is er echter niet meer van gekomen; alleen het inleidende werk is opnieuw geschreven, bewaard gebleven en uitgegeven als ‘Vedic Mathematics’.
Śrī Bhāratī Kṛṣṇa Tīrthajī Mahārāja Śaṅkarācārya zegt:
“……. so I studied the old lexicons, including Viśva, Amara, Arṇava, Śabdakalpadruma etc., books which are known by name only, and which people see in the libraries, but which are never turned for any useful purpose. Well, with these I was able to find out the meanings. I got the key in that way in one instance, and one thing after another helped me in the elucidation of the other Sūtra’s, the other formulae. And I found to my extreme astonishment and gratification that the Sūtra’s dealt with mathematics, in all its branches. Only sixteen Sūtra’s cover all branches of mathematics, arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, physics, plain and spherical geometry, conics, calculus, both differential and integral, applied mathematics of various kinds, dynamics, hydrostatics, statics, kinematics, and all. …..”

Ieder wiskundig probleem kan met behulp van één of meerdere Sūtra’s van de Vedische Wiskunde worden opgelost, uit het hoofd en in één regel.
